How JCB test their Tough Phones

JCB test their tough phones thoroughly to make sure they can survive in a tough environment. Most JCB tough phones go through 17 main test phases and 5 specific test phases to make sure they are ready to go on sale.

17 Main JCB Tough Phone Tests

Firstly, there is the Rolling Drop Test which is where the phone is dropped from a height of 50 centimetres over 1,000 times.

Following this, JCB Tough Phones are put through the LCD Impact Test where the LCD screen has 0.5 Nm of pressure put on.

The third test is the Compression Test, when the phone has 170Nm pressure put on to both front and rear of the case, at the same time, 5,000 times.

Next is the Anti Bending Test, where the front and the rear case are bent 5,000 times with 250Nm of pressure applied.

After the Anti Bending Test comes the Twist Test. JCB Tough Phones are twisted 5,000 times with a pressure of 2Nm and a further 20,000 times with pressure of 1Nm.

For the Humidity Test, JCB Tough Phones are kept in a chamber for 2 days at 70 degrees Celsius and at 90% relative humidity.

An Electro Static Discharge Test is then carried out. The phone has +/-4KV Contact Discharge and +/- 12KV Air Discharge sent throughout the phone

JCB Tough Phones are then put through the Vibration Test, where the phone is set to 3G of vibration for 2 hours/axis plus bumps of 25G for 40 minutes/axis

To gauge whether the phones can operate in extreme temperatures, JCB use the High Temperature Test, where the phone is used at +75 degrees Celsius for 24 hours, and Low Temperature Test, when someone uses the phone at -30 degrees Celsius for 24 hours.

As well as ensuring their Tough Phones can withstand extreme temperatures, JCB also perform a Thermal Shock Test to check that their Tough Phones can be taken quickly between a cold and warm environment (approximately from -40 degrees Celsius and +70 degrees Celsius.)

For the Salt Spraying Test, a 5% Sodium chloride solution is sprayed over the phone at 1 litre per hour continuously for 24 hours.

A critical test for usability, the Keyboard Test involves every key on the keyboard being pressed 30,000 times and every 8,000th time all keys are subjected to an 8Nm pressure test.

The fourteenth test is the Side Button Test, where each button on the side of the phone is pressed 100,000 times and every 5,000 cycles an 8Nm meter pressure is applied.

In the SIM Test, the SIM card is inserted and removed 3,000 times, and in the USB Test the USB cable for the phone is inserted and removed 5,000 times.

The final test is the Earphone Test, where earphones are inserted and removed 5,000 times.

As well as the main 17 JCB Tough Phone Tests, there are 5 Extra Tests that are specified to certain phones that are listed with the test.

5 Extra JCB Tough Phone Tests

The first Extra JCB Tough Phone test is the Drop Test (which applies to the JCB Sitemaster, JCB Pro and JCB Pro-Talk). All these phones are dropped from a 2m height on to six surfaces and all four corners of the phones.

Next is the IP Dust Test (which applies to the JCB Sitemaster, JCB Pro and JCB Pro-Talk). These phones are kept in a chamber for 8 hours with 2kg of dust per M3 of air.

As well as the IP Dust Test, there is the IP Water Test – this test only applies to the JCB Tradesman, JCB Pro and JCB Pro-Talk. For this test, the Tough Phone is submerged into 30cm of water for 8 hours.

The forth extra test is the Touch Screen Life Test, for the JCB Pro and JCB Pro-Talk. During this test, JCB drag a pen across the screen 10,000 times with 250gf +/- 10% at 60mm per second and strength of stroke at 25mm.

Finally, there is the SD Card Test, which applies to the JCB Sitemaster, JCB Pro and JCB Pro-Talk. To ensure that the SD card can be inserted and removed lots of times, the SD card replaced approximately 5,000 times.
